In The Cave
Plato thought our world is copied world. He described our world as a cave to illustrate that the original world is out there. We see the shadows and believe it is the truth and the whole world. Nowadays, We live in a virtual world full of illusions. Is it REAL what you see on TV shows, News, Dramas, Films, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook? What do you know is really true?
You can see an AI-drawn cave painting and a dancer in the video. The dancer is not a human but a dummy and all the surfaces surrounding him are cave paintings. Although Dummy may resemble a human, it cannot become an original. Could you quickly spot that this isn't human? Are cave paintings actual? At least in this cave, it seems the truth and all you can see. But it is covering something that lies beyond it. The dancer gradually fades and becomes a shadow itself and then disappears. What has been making you addicted all this time? What were you watching? Why so serious?

Human Body: Center of the world?
2022
Medium: Video, Installation
Renaissance artists believed that humans were the center of the world. Da Vinci experimented with the old idea of mathematically measuring the human body from a geometric point of view. Da Vinci measured the actual body for this painting and said that center of the human body is the navel.
Da Vinci saw the human as a microcosm of the universe. He thought that the proportions of all the universe began with the proportions of the human body. He strived to find patterns of this universe.
This painting is a classic example of how human-based art is converged with science. How about now? We still seem to believe that humans are the center of the world. Artificial intelligence that resembles humans is still advancing more and more. All technologies, systems, rules are human-friendly, and we use them for ourselves.
So, for this piece, I used Photoshop's Content-Aware feature. If you leave only a part of the picture and erase the rest, the computer calculates and fills the space. Therefore, this work was not done by me but by my laptop. My laptop also seems to agree with Da Vinci's idea. It made its pattern, and there are specific rules for drawing.

The advent of smartphones and the Internet completely changed the relationship of human society by remediating it. Nowadays, we don't have to talk to our immediate neighbors because of connecting and communicating with the world in real-time. In the city, zombies mesmerized by smartphones are just walking around involuntarily. We can see this as the birth of 'zombie-smartphone-user-human.'

"Working hard, you are the real leaders of society."
No one in this world is afraid of losing their job. It is due to 20 years ago, a brand new union of the world is composed and scoured every house, giving everyone a job. All people work equally, 9 hours a day, five days a week, and live happily. 17-year-old Brandon, who runs the neighborhood's public bulletin board everyday, smiles and says he's happy with this society that guarantees employment until the day of his death. "I've been doing this work for two years already, from my 15th birthday to today, and now I love my job. Everyone I meet on the street has their job. I heard that 20 years ago, many people were in a panic because it was difficult to get a job. I am happy to be born in a world with guaranteed jobs. Once, I had a friend in school called Samuel talking nonsense that he didn't want to work for his entire life. Suddenly, he didn't come to school one day, and he cut off all the other friends. Haha. Weirdo. Anyway, even he must be getting a job somewhere and living a good life by now."

A flock of chairs 군계

In my illustration, the chair symbolizes a person. In modern society, a chair is a symbol of the place where many people spend the longest time in their whole life. People participate in this world making up society. People are always in the crowd. Does this society really want you to be a special person? Do you perceive yourself as distinct from the community? I used the repetition technique to express that a person is part of a crowded society. Chairs interlocking like cogs suggests that you are a part of the big society.
I wanted to create an optical illusion image using repetition. I borrowed the visual technique which Maurits Cornelis Escher used in his picture 'Sky and Water I'. As Escher did, I made it looks like a sketch on purpose. I intentionally made it difficult to tell the top and bottom, hard to distinguish the objects and the background.
